This was not the first time I heard this from someone who booked me for their event…so I asked him if he’d say it on camera and he was excited to! (sorry about the audio, something went a little weird with that) But the jist of what he said was for the past few year they have book band after band and students just don’t show up to the concert. I think we had all but like 10 kids from the entire conference at my show. One person said after the show, “There weren’t really ‘late-night options’ tonight, more like one big ‘late-night OPTION!’” The crowd was so excited to get in the doors that a girl almost got trampled! (Yikes for her, but shows you the excitement in the crowd!) Check out what the guy who booked me said:

The Magic in a Child’s Imagination

I’m just going to say it…I AM JEALOUS OF MY DAUGHTER. I so envy how she and my little guy can leave reality in a blink and transport themselves to the Neverlands of their imaginations. Remember when you could pretend you were an airplane or a fairy and fly on the backs of the winds. I often play with my kids as they imagine worlds that I can only see now in my dreams. That’s where real magic exists…

One of my daughter’s favorite games is to pretend she’s a princess and that daddy is the king or that she’s Tinkerbell and that daddy is Captain Hook (and that brother is Peter Pan and that leaves mommy as the Wendy Lady). I so look forward to the multiple times a day that she comes and gives me a big hug and says, “I lowve you Cap-in Hook!” to which she expects the reply, “I love you too Tinkerbell!” Because of this it was my wife and I’s extreme delight to take her to meet Tinkerbell and a bunch of princesses at the Happiest Place on Earth…DISNEYLAND.

My Take on Psychics

Recently, I had a woman come up to me after my show and ask what I thought about Psychics. Are they real? Is there any validity to them? I told her that the only real supernatural I believe in (after much research into the subject) is what is talked about in the Bible. I do have an oblivious bias here, but I also have done my research.

First, do I believe that someone could read fortunes by a spirit, even if it is an evil spirit like a demon? Yes. In Acts 16:16ff it talks about a girl “who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.”

Do I believe that most modern psychics and fortune tellers are using demons? No. Nor do I believe that crystals and the like have supernatural powers. I know how to perform the illusion of reading minds. I know how to stack a deck of card (which could be regular playing cards or Tarot cards). I have read books on palm reading where the book basically said, “Make the fortune encouraging, but not too great and clean cut or the person will not believe it…” Modern Psychics are entertainers or know how to read people (like mentalists) and are really good at tickling peoples ears and then unloading their wallets.

So how do they do it? They use something called “Barnum Statements.” P.T. Barnum (co-founder of Barnum & Bailey’s Circus) is famous for saying two things: “We have something for everyone!” & “There’s a sucker born every minute!” Both are true here. A “Barnum Statement” is statement that could be true of most any human being, but we make personal to ourselves.

In 1948, phycologist Bertram R. Forer tested this theory out by telling his students that he would give them all an unique personality analysis based on very limited information given by the student. When the students received the analysis back the students gave them a 4.26 out of 5 for being uniquely accurate of their personality. The problem was that everyone received the exact same analysis. This is how most modern psychics give fortunes…

In case you’re wondering if it works, here’s the analysis that Forer gave his students. Try it out on a friend or co-worker–have them give you their full birthday, and then pretend to think about it for a while, then copy and paste the following to them:

You have a great need for other people to like and admire you. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others’ statements without satisfactory proof. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic. Security is one of your major goals in life.

Escaping from a Straight Jacket

Just another day at the office. This was done in a park in El Salvador. After I escaped we had a ex-con from El Salvador share how God had redeemed his life, and then Jason Ostrander shared the gospel to a receptive crowd! Praise God that I could be a part of something like this ushering people into His Kingdom!

Orphans

On this trip to El Salvador I had the privilege of going and making orphans smile through magic tricks…and hugs! The orphanage I went to is run by an ex-prostitue who has found Jesus and now takes in abandoned children of prostitutes. Tia Ana (Aunt Ana) currently has 16 1/2 kids living with her (one of the 15 year old girls is pregnant). It was a blast pulling sponge balls and coins out of ears and elbows and making faces light up with smiles!

That night the conference I was a part of invited Tia Ana and all her kids to join us and share with us her story. (The CMA EnVision site in El Salvador supports the orphanage) Tia Ana shared her amazing testimony. It was incredible to hear how someone who came from such brokenness could be so redeemed by her Heavenly Father, and then reach out to others so broken in need of a heavenly father. After she shared her story we invited all her kids to join her, and then we gathered around them and prayed for them. I was quickly recognized by a couple of the boys from earlier that day and went to them and laid hands on them to pray. A fourth of the way through the prayer one of them hugged me. When I say hugged me I mean HUGGED me. I have no idea when if ever he has ever had a man hug and hold him, but during the 10 mins we all prayed over them he just held onto me and wept into my chest. It made me think of my two kids and praise God that I have them and they have me. It also made my heart break for this boy and pray he is able to press into his Heavenly Father!

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -James 1:27

So I was playing around tonight with some “psychokinesis” effects (being able to move things with your mind, or at least the illusion of psychokinesis), mainly making a pencil spin and move with just the wiggle of my fingers. My daughter and son were watching me, and so I told my two year old daughter to wiggle her fingers at the pencil and it moved! Her reaction was, “WOW!! Again!”
